L-tryptophan is an essential amino acid, which must be consumed since the body cannot make it using other amino acids. It is present in virtually all plant and animal proteins.

Once the body absorbs L-tryptophan, it converts it into 5-hyrdoxytryptophan (5-HTP) and then into the neuro-transmitter serotonin. It is primarily the serotonin that does all the wonderful things attributed to L-tryptophan.

Additional L-tryptophan intake has been known to improve sleep, calm stress and raise one's mood.

The old idea of drinking a glass of warm milk at bedtime (not so good for other reasons) is due to the tryptophan in milk. Turkey eaters who get mellow and drowsy after Thanksgiving dinner are often said to be affected by the substantial tryptophan level.
